I look out from my window at a view across the town
And watch the traffic flashing by as it travels up and down.
In the distance I can see St James’ Park, A temple to small gods.
A mass of steel that holds the crowds that surround the hallowed sods
And close at hand two mighty spans that draw the watchers eye
The great Tyne Bridge; the new Tyne Bridge both soar into the sky.
One carries the cars that flash right by beneath my kitchen wall.
The other one is more sedate, it simply conveys all
pedestrians from the bars on the quayside where they drink away their days
to the art gallery and the concert halls on the Gateshead Quays.
