The Gateshead Millenium Bridge.
Wanting a monument
to celebrate the moment
of the Millennium of the birth of Christ
It was thought to bridge the river
so a structure was delivered
from a shipyard on the banks of the Tyne

Moving up the Tyne on a massive floating crane
the bridge was installed in a day
Stark white, steely bright, glinting in the sun,
this arch of steel links both banks of the Tyne.

A bridge that winks; a blinking eye;
opening lid like to the sky.
Thrusting sideways, circling high
a hoop of metal round the sky;
a brand new landmark ‘cross the Tyne.

It echoes other older spans,
mighty monuments to man.
Bridges marching down the river;
Redeough, Swing Bridge, High level, Tyne.
