The Blue Carpet
The
carpet sparkles lightly blue,
an artwork spread out on the ground.
Illumined with a gentle hue
of optic fibres sparkling round
and underneath the paving slabs
around the gallery in the town.
Chewing gum trodden in dabs
do not detract, nor wrappers strewn
by thoughtless shoppers hurrying out,
not looking down at the blocks.
Ignoring traffic noise and the echoed shout
of vendors selling fruit or socks
in the market down the street.
The hurrying masses see no art
as they crush and cram on shuffling feet,
jostling to a standing start.
Sightless to the beauty in their day
as they push and jostle side by side
But rarely touch as on their way
to something new, they only hide
and do not see the glass carpet, sparkling blue;
shading pale to purple in gentle hue.
