Left - The Odeon Cinema. At one time this cinema, built in the 1930's was reputedly the second largest in the world after the Odeon Paris. This building is immediately adjacent to the Alhambra Theatre. The cinema wall shows on the right of the Alhambra photo.
Left - The Alhambra Theatre. Built in the early 1900's the theatre was extensivly rebuilt about 20 years ago. One query. Alhambra means red dome. The domes used to be red.........??

Far right- Listers Mill, Manningham.

Right - Salts Mill, Saltaire

Both mills have chimneys whose design was based on medieval Italian towers (see also Bradford City hall, above)

 

Left and above- The Bradford Wool Exchange. Until the middle of the 20th Century bradford was recognised as the 'Wool capital' of the world with over 300 spinning and weaving mills in the city.
Left _ The memorial to the victims of the Bradford Football Club Fire on 11th May 1985. 56 people died and over 250 were injured when one of the old wooden stands burned down during a football match. The disiaster resulted new safety regulations being introduced in sports stadia throughout the country.
Above - Bradford City Hall. The tower of this Victorian building was modelled on the tower of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence ( see left). In the 1960's there were proposals to pull this marvellous building down and replace it with a modern structure. Thankfully the plans were defeated.

Above and above left - Four views of Bradford Cathedral. The west tower and nave are 15th Century (left). The Chancel and Central tower were rebuilt in the 1960's to a design by Sir Edward Maufe, Architect of Guildford Cathedral and replaced a Victorian Chancel.
