Victorian Newcastle

Above and right. St. Mary's RC Cathedral. Designed by architect Augustus Pugin, the Cathedral was constructed in 1844 but due to a lack of unds the tower and spire were not added

until 1872. In 2002 an act of wanton destruction took place when the few remaining trees in the area were felled to make space for a statue of the late Cardinal Basil Hume. Whilst the statue is in itself a fine work (see above right), the desecration of the small churchyard will never be forgiven by many people.

Above and above right - Newcastle Central Station. Opened by Queen Victoria in 1850, Central Station is one of only six 'cathedral' stations remaining in Great Britain. The Station was designed by local architect John Dobson who had earlier built much of the late Georgian Newcastle (see previous page). The classic portico was added in 1863.
Left - Saltwell Towers. Gateshead
