The Gateshead Millenium
Bridge is the first bridge in the world to open for shipping in the way that
an eye opens. Locally it has been nicknamed 'the blinking eye'. It was constucted
at the Swan Hunter Shipyard on the River Tyne. It was then floated upriver
on a giant barge and lifted into place by the world's second largest floating
crane. See the pictures on the bridges construction page.
