Theatres.

Above and above right - The Theatre Royal,Newcastle-upon-Tyne. A theatre has stood on this site since the 1830's. The present building was largely rebuilt in the 1860's and completely modernised inside in the 1990's.

Right - The Theatre Royal, interior.

The Theatre Royal stages a plethora of shows from local amateur musicals to London West End Spectaculars and West End plays. It is the Northern home of The Royal Shakespeare Company.

Left - The Tyne Theatre and Opera House.

Opened in 1867 the building operated as a theatre until the end of the First World War when it was purchased by the Stoll Group and converted to a cinema. The 'Stoll' closed in 1974 and remained empty and semi-derelict until a major fire in 1985 destroyed much of the roof. ............................................................ A campaign to save the theatre, which had been going on for some time, quickly gathered momentum and the building reopened as a theatre in 1986.

The Tyne Theatre and Opera House houses what is believed to be the oldest working stage machinery in Britain and possibly in the world, installed during construction of the theatre in 1867.Fortunately it remained undamaged by the fire of 1985.
